St Mary Magdalene Church, Campsall
The church of St Mary Magdalene dates from Norman times and it
is reputed that Robin Hood and Maid Marion were married here. This
is supported by the nearby Robin Hood's Well situated at the side
of the A1 trunk road a couple of miles away.
In the churchyard there is a square stone trough with a scooped
top which folklore holds is the 'plague stone'. Until recently this
stone was located on the boundary between the villages of Campsall
and Sutton; it is thought that during the plague food was left at
the edge of the village and was paid for by money put in vinegar
in the stone to prevent the passing of infection. A dip in the road
leading to the A1, known as Bone Lane, is said to be caused by the
burying of bones during the plague.
